1963 - As the show continued into its second year opinions were positive and as such it looked like the future James Bond had a hit on his hands! Well, after the forray into US MGM shows which weren't so well recieved I am sure it was a welcome relief to be able to settle. Around the world however film, television and other things were changing. Some of the greatest films were actually released in this year, From Russia With Love, The Great Escape, Cleopatra (at the time the most expensive film ever made), The Birds, Charade, and The Haunting; to name but a few. Amazing really to think such a variety of films were released in this time period - all constantly on replay on TV and in our DVD/VHS players. To rival the success of the initial block of Saint episodes there was a slight shift in the shows aired on TV this year. Apart from those already mentioend in 1962, Dr Who aired for the first time, Espionage, Love Story, Our Man at St. Mark's, The Dick Emery Show, Taxi and Space Patrol. Where Dr Who has proved beyond a doubt that Time Lords will indeed live on with a new show in 2005 many of these other shows were short lived affairs starring such names as Sid James and Leslei Phillips - who became comedy stars through the Rank corporation. In other aspects of 1963, the Elysee treaty between France and Germany occured; the last state to hold out against racial integration (South Carolina) eventually conformed; 70,000 march on London to petition nuclear weapons resulting in a 3 way nuclear test ban between the US, Russia and UK. Martin Luther King delivers one of the most famous speeches of the century in August, JFK is assassinated in November (23/11) and the civil war between Greek and Turkish Cypriots erupts.
