1965 - Producing slightly fewer episodes, The Saint moved into its 4th year on out screens. Currently leading The Avengers as the longest running spy series, The saint moved into much more stealthy, fantasty stories - nearly all of which are influenced or based around the original Charteris' novels Film during this year was an interesting beast, 3 of 1964's top grossing ilms are also placed in 1965 - Mary Poppins, Goldfinger and My Fair Lady. However, they would face competition from The Sound of Music, Dr Zhivago, For A Few Dollars More, The ipcress File and Thunderball. Incidently Sound of Music won the Best Film Oscar - :o) On television, cigarette advertising was banned in the UK, Lost In Space debuted alongside Days of Our Lives in the US. The UK saw little change, with Danger Man, The Avengers, Z-Cars, Coronation Street, Dr Who and Blue Peter still mainstay shows. In other aspects of 1965 political change was everywhere; Singpore gained independence from Malaysia, Rhodesia declared their independence from British Rule which resulted in Oil Embargoes and requests from Zambia for removal of the white minority rule over the border. Vietnam erupted with the first US troops landing in the southern part of the country with the Viet Cong taking the war very much to the US - Australia offered their support and landed troops later the same year. Meanwhile in America the Civil Rights movement reached a peak, with 3 marches onto Montgommery - only the 3rd march was successful. Martin Luthar King Jr lead the final 2 marches, following the Bloody Sunday march which saw 600 citizens attacked and Malcolm X was assassinated on 21/2; making life in the US very rocky at this time. In the UK Edward Heath leads the Conservative Party, the Pennine way is opened to the public, Sir Stanley Matthews retires from football at age 50 yrs and 5 days. Britain's main problems were Africa and India/Pakistan - the latter at war with attempts at reconciliation failing on Soviet soil. The Moors murderers were capured whilst the Auschwitz trial sentences 66 SS personnel to life imprisonment. Edward White became the first man to walk in space, and J.K. Rowling - author of Harry Potter - was born. Finally, the 20 episodes of 1965:
